worried middle aged man

I am 43 years old. I have suffered erection malfunction although I am healthy and fit. My penis does not become 100%  erected, just 75 %. I need to overcome this. Are there herbs or healthy foods I can use? I don’t want drugs. What do you advise me?

You don’t have an erection “malfunction.” What you have is erection dissatisfaction, something very common among men in their forties. After around 40, most men notice that their erections are not as firm as they used to be–as you mentioned 75% instead of 100%. That’s normal. That’s not erectile dysfunction (ED). It’s normal, age-related erection changes, which can be unnerving, but that’s what happens to men over 40.

What to do about it? First try not to become worried. Anxiety triggers the fight-or-flight reflex that sends blood away from the central body, including the penis, to the arms and legs for self-defense or escape. In other words, anxiety reduce the amount of blood available for erection. Try to accept yourself and the erection changes that aging brings. I know this is difficult. But getting upset only makes things worse. Try to relax about your penis. I suggest you read the article Weak Erections? Or Erectile Dysfunction?

You asked about foods that might help. No foods can magically change things for you, but a diet based on plant foods (fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes) definitely helps. Plant foods are very low in the kind of fat associated with narrowing of the arteries, which limits the blood supply to the penis. The bad fat is animal (saturated) fat. A diet high in animal fat (meat more than a few times a week) causes narrowing of the arteries not just in the penis, but all over the body. That’s why a diet high in fatty meats is associated with heart disease. My advice: Limit the amount of meat you eat (beef, pork, lamb). Don’t eat poultry skin either. I suggest you read the article Food and Sex.

Meanwhile, cigarettes also narrow the arteries and limit blood flow to the penis. If you smoke, quit. And alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that interferes with erection. Limit the amount you drink, especially in the hour or two before sex.

You asked about herbs that might help. Again, there’s no magic herb that’s going to give you rock-hard erections. But several herbs, notably ginseng, have been used to treat erection problems. Korean researchers gave 45 men with erection problems either a placebo or ginseng (900 mg three times a day). After eight weeks, the ginseng group experienced significant erection improvement. For more on this, and on other herbs with pro-sexual effects, I suggest that you read the article on Aphrodisiacs.
