I am 61 years old and over the last few years have lost penis sensitivity during sex  to the point of not being able to ejaculate easily. I take these meds: generic Lipitor, Finasteride, Trazodone and Zolpidem. Would any of these affect my penis sensitivity during penetration? Thanks

I can’t say for sure what’s caused your loss of penile sensitivity. But here are some things to think about:

As men age, they often experience more difficulty with ejaculation and orgasm. With age, the nervous system becomes less sensitive to stimulation. Older men often need more vigorous, more sustained stimulation to have orgasms. So some of your situation could be due to aging. One of my low-cost articles may help: Ejaculation and Orgasm Difficulties: Can’t Get There? It presents a self-help version of the program sex therapists recommend to resolve this problem. It might help you.

In addition, Zolpidem and Trazodone may cause or aggravate your problem. Zolpidem is a sedative. Sedatives make the body less sensitive to stimulation, which is why they help you sleep. Depending on the dose, Trazodone is a sedative and antidepressant. If you’re using it as a sedative, then you’re taking two sleep aids with additive effects on your physical sensitivity. If you’re using it as an antidepressants, you know know that antidepressants are notorious for contributing to or causing sex problems, including difficulty with ejaculation/orgasm. So either or both of these drugs may contribute to your situation. In addition, the more different meds one takes, the more likely they are to have adverse interactions, which can be unusual and unpredictable, possibly including your issue.

    What to do?
    • Read my article.
    • If you’re using Trazodone as an antidepressant, ask your prescribing physician if you can switch to Wellbutrin, an equally effective antidepressant that causes fewer sex problems.
    • Work to get off sleep drugs. If you haven’t read any of the many beat-insomnia books, I urge you to try a few. Go to Amazon and search Books for “insomnia.” In addition, get more exercise every day. That helps with sleep. And consider the tranquilizing herbs: valerian, chamomile, passionflower, scullcap, hop, and lemon balm. They’re not as powerful as pharmaceutical sleeping pills, but they help induce sleep and have fewer side effects. Go to any health food store and look for herbal sleep teas or pills/capsules that contain the herbs I mentioned.

    Good luck!
