Recently I switched to alkaline foods. As a by-product of doing this I have noticed that I have increased vaginal lubrication (I am 65). Have you any information that supports that alkalinizing your body can do this? Thank you

Funny you should mention an alkaline diet. I’m the coauthor (with Amy Joy Lanou, Ph.D) of Building Bone Vitality (2009), which shows that an alkaline diet—mostly plant foods with a minimum of protein—helps prevent osteoporosis.

During the research for the book, I did not come across any studies showing that an alkaline diet improves vaginal lubrication. However, a plant-based diet helps prevent not just bone loss but also heart disease by reducing the build-up of cholesterol-rich deposits on the artery walls. Vaginal lubrication is the result of some blood fluid (plasma) seeping out of the vaginal capillaries. To the extent that an alkaline diet contributes to arterial health, it’s possible that freer blood flow through your vaginal arteries is translating to more plasma showing up in your vagina as lubrication. I can’t cite any studies, but I’m guessing this is biologically plausible.

Enjoy your plant-based diet—and increased lubrication.
