Osteoarthritis and Sex

Hello Michael,
I’m a great admirer of your work. So much has been written regarding female sexuality but so little about male. I’m 72 now and even though I’m happily married, I’ve masturbated continuously for the past 60 years. There’s no doubt that self-pleasure has been a significant part of my life.

Reflecting on my masturbation habits and frequency, I began to wonder how many times I’ve stroked during those 6 decades. I did some rough (and I believe conservative) estimates, and was astonished to realize I’d masturbated somewhere between 16,000 and 18,000 times.

My question relates to the pleasure of male orgasm. In my teens I did it 2-3 times a day and my goal was to get to orgasm as quickly as possible. Then I married and my frequency slowed a bit but I began to masturbate in the shower  before work. For the next 4 decades, my mornings began with a quick wank in the shower. An ideal solution because it didn’t interfere with our married sex. On a humorous note, it soon got to the point where just getting into the shower I’d get an erection.

The thing is, I now believe that the pleasure I experience during orgasm is far greater than at any time in my life. I’m quite amazed at times by the intensity my pleasure, even to the point of completely losing touch with reality. My recollection suggests it was never like this in my earlier years.

Michael, is there any evidence that this is a phenomenon associated with aging? As we lose our ability to maintain the frequency of our youth, do we replace quantity with quality? I’m still walking 3-4 times weekly. I searched the web in an attempt to find any science to support my theory but found none. In fact, the contrary seems to be the general rule—older men reporting less pleasure as they age.

It may come down to subjectivity, but it certainly seems more ‘real’ than that to me. I guess, regardless of the reason, I’m one lucky guy.

I look forward to your reply,

First, your frequency of stroking is by no means unusual. Many teenaged men masturbate more than once a day, and many men of all ages polish pipe daily well into late life.

About feeling more intense orgasms now than in your youth, many men notice this. Here’s the reason—your prostate gland. I’m guessing you still have yours intact, that you haven’t had prostate surgery.

With age, the prostate enlarges and pinches the urethra, the tube that carries urine and semen out of the body. As the urethra gets pinched, it takes more effort to urinate, especially to squeeze out the last bit of liquid. That squeezing works the pelvic floor muscles, the ones that run between the legs. With repeated urination and pelvic floor muscle contractions, the muscles grow stronger, their contractions more powerful. Those same pelvic floor muscles are the ones that contract during orgasm. People who want more intense orgasms are advised to do Kegel exercises, which tone those muscles. You’ve been doing Kegels unconsciously for years every time you urinate. You’ve been strengthening your orgasm muscles, and as a result, you’ve been enjoying stronger orgasms.

Aging brings new challenges, but it also brings new joys. Wank on. And instead of getting annoyed at how much more difficult it now is to pee, celebrate the fact that every squeeze intensifies your orgasms.

    I wish you great sex.
