Portrait of elderly man with eyeglasses

I’m 59, with Type-2 diabetes, and believe I have erectile dysfunction as I rarely get erections. I  wake with a soft semi-erection but do not become firm. My blood sugars in the morning are between 6-8 I’m on 4 x 500 metformin 1 x gliclizide 1x dapaglifozin 20 units of lantus insulin before bed. I don’t get sexually aroused with lack of feeling or limited blood flow to my genitals. What can I do pls?

Even without diabetes, by age 59, many if not most men develop erection difficulties. As you probably know, diabetes is a major risk factor for ED. Diabetes accelerates narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), which reduces blood flow around the body, including into the penis. Less blood in the penis means less firmness. You say you still wake with morning semi-erections. That’s very good considering the diabetes medications and insulin you take.

I can’t offer you any magic potion to restore your erections. But a healthy lifestyle helps control diabetes, and may allow you to reduce your drug/insulin use, which may improve your firmness. If you smoke, ask your doctor for help quitting. If you’re overweight, work with your doctor and/or a diabetes educator to eat a lower fat diet and become more physically active so you lose weight.

How much alcohol do you drink? It’s a major erection killer, and it also interferes with genital sensation. If you drink, try cutting back or stopping.

To improve genital sensation during solo or partner sex, use a sexual lubricant. They’re available at drug stores. Look near the condoms.
