I wanted to ask a question about masturbation. Is masturbating unnatural or weird? Recently, my mother has caught me masturbating (I am male btw.) And she got very angry with me and called me many names. The next day, I avoided her as much as I could and spoke very little to her. Later that same day, she came to me telling me that she better not ever catch me doing that again. I responded saying that she acts as if masturbation is unnatural and she replied that it is. She has caught me other times too and acted the same way each time. The simple solution would be to go somewhere private and lock the door but the problem is that my mother will not allow me to ever lock my doors or just be by myself for long periods of times. She never knocks and just walks right into my room. I don’t understand why she thinks masturbation is unnatural either. She is a Christian and she does try to force her thoughts or beliefs onto other people rather than accept that people have different views.

Masturbation is the most natural thing in the world. The moment infants find their genitals, they become enthusiastic self-sexers—until their parents castigate them for it. Even then, most young people don’t stop. They simply go deeper underground and do it in secret. I’m very sorry that you have no privacy. That sucks. But I imagine you’re a creative young man who can think of something!
The Biblical prohibition against solo sex comes from the story of Onan in Genesis. Have you ever read it? I suggest you do. Onan was supposed to impregnate his dead brother’s wife to provide a surrogate heir. But if he did so, he stood to lose the majority of his father’s estate. So he withdrew before ejaculating and “spilled his seed on the ground.” God struck him dead. Poor Onan didn’t even masturbate. But classic Jewish, Christian, and Muslim theologians said he deserved death for non-procreative sex.
Today, in the real world, the vast majority of sex is non-procreative. It’s masturbation or recreational sex, sex for fun. Religious conservatives like your Mom have real problems with that. I do not want to disparage anyone’s religion, or come between you and your mother. But take it from this sex expert: The vast majority of boys and men of all ages self-sex regularly.
