Portrait of a beautiful young asian professional businesswoman thinking something

I am a 18 year old female who needs lubricant for sex. Are there other lubricants besides oil that I can use for unprotected sex? Could I use a water based lube?

If you’re having unprotected sex, you’re at HIGH RISK of pregnancy. If you don’t want to get pregnant, I urge you to visit a pharmacy for condoms or a family planning clinic, Planned Parenthood, or your doctor or gynecologist to learn about all the contraceptives and decide which one fits best into your life. Then use your method religiously until you affirmatively decide you want to have a child.

The world’s most popular sexual lubricant is saliva, which is water-based. If you’re interested in commercial lubricants, I urge you to visit a pharmacy and check out the various lubes. Look near the condoms. Most commercial lubricants are water-based. You’ll see “water” or “purified water” as an top ingredient. Brands include: KY and Astroglide. There are also many others.

Oil-based lubes—vegetable and nut oils—work for some women but carry a risk of changing the vaginal environment in ways that may contribute to irritation or infection. I suggest sticking to water-based lubes.

BTW: In case you’re wondering why a young woman like you needs lubricant, many women of all ages don’t produce enough self-lubrication on their own for comfortable intercourse. This doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you. It’s probably just who you are. But you might mention this at your next regular gynecology appointment so the doctor can make sure all’s well.
