worried middle aged man

Hello. I read your article on “erection dissatisfaction” and was wondering if that could be my issue. I am a 61 year old male, and I’d say that over the past 2-3 months, I have noticed that I am no longer able to get or maintain a full erection. It only becomes semi-erect. I’ve also noticed that when I ejaculate, the amount of semen is only a few drops. Is this erection dissatisfaction or ED? I am single. I am not actively engaged in a sexual intercourse with anyone. I usually masturbate once every month or two. My sexual desire has also begun to diminish as well. I have read that blood vessels that run inside the penis is what causes men to sustain an erection. Is it possible that I may have some sort of blockage? Or low Testosterone levels? Is this a matter that I should feel comfortable talking with my doctor about? A are there tests that or examination that he call do to test for certain things?  I know that at age 61, my body has begun to wear down in certain areas, but I am not a diabetic nor do I suffer from High Blood Pressure. I  would greatly appreciate and value any advice that you might have for me. Thank you and God bless.

You’re dissatisfied with your erections, so you definitely have erection dissatisfaction. The question is: Do you have ED?

Most men develop erection dissatisfaction in their 50s. You’re 61, so natural erection changes have occurred later in life for you than for most men. That’s good news. But now you’re experiencing more difficulties. I’m not a doctor, but your description of your situation sounds pretty normal to me. Most men over 60 have some erection loss and diminished semen production is also very common.

You ask if an arterial blockage—actually narrowing— is possible. Yes, it is, but arterial narrowing is often associated with diabetes and high blood pressure. Narrowing is also linked to sedentary lifestyle and obesity. If you don’t have those risk factors, it’s unlikely that serious arterial narrowing is to blame for your situation.

You ask if you might be testosterone deficient. That’s unlikely. The main symptom of low T is collapse of libido, not erection trouble. If you still desire monthly or bimonthly self-sexing, that would argue against low T. Still, you might have it checked by a doctor. The problem is that testosterone blood levels fluctuate considerably during the day. You might show a low reading in one test, but have perfectly normal readings in others. Consequently, you get reliable data only from SEVERAL tests at different times of day. If you get tested, make sure you get more than one test.

Do you drink alcohol before solo sex? Most young men can enjoy a drink or two within an hour of sex and still function fine. But among older men, even one drink beforehand can impair erection. If you drink alcohol before stroking, you might consider backing off on the number of drinks.

Finally, it’s important to understand two things: Gradual erection loss is totally normal after age 50. And men don’t need erections to have orgasms. That’s right. You can have much less erection function than you now have and with sufficient friction and vivid fantasies, still enjoy marvelous orgasms.

    I wish you great sex.
