My husband cannot have an erection due to prostate cancer surgery. Viagra hasn’t helped. Any ideas on what we can do to make penetration possible? Thank you.

You’re in luck. There is one medical approach that can help—prostaglandin E1 known as alprostadil and marketed as Caverject (injected) and Muse (penile suppository).
The good news is that this drug produces firm erections very reliably in cases where the nerves have been damaged, usually the cause of erection loss after prostate cancer surgery. The bad news is: (1) Caverject must be injected directly into the penis, and some men can’t bring themselves to do this. (2) Muse pellets must be inserted into the urethra, and some men can handle that. And (3) the dose can be tricky. Use too much and the man may experience priapism, painful sustained erection that must be deflated in an emergency room. Many men suffer one or two episodes on the way to figuring out the right dose for them. If your husband is interested, he should see a urologist.
Meanwhile, you might be interested to know that there’s another approach to sex after prostate cancer surgery, lovemaking without and erection, without intercourse, but with lots of kissing, hugging, caressing, mutual massage, and oral sex. Men who can no longer raise erections can still have orgasms with sustained manual stroking or fellatio. Besides, few women have orgasms during intercourse. Most need direct clitoral stimulation with hand, mouth, or toy. Now, it takes some getting used to for a couple to transition from lovemaking with intercourse to lovemaking without it, but many couples in your situation find that non-intercourse lovemaking works fine. For more information, read my article Great Sex Without Intercourse.
And if you want to have intercourse, then your husband can ask a urologist for alprostadil.
I had the same problem with Viagra and the injection method works every time and you maintain a erection for up to 50 mins or untill you have a orgasm. My wife actually helps with the injection its part of our foreplay it has given us our life back and the sex is outstanding. I am 73 and she is 70.
I lost my prostate to cancer and could not have nerve sparing so I am on injection therapy. I use Tri-Mix with a diabetic ultra-thin needle. I am also 73 and my wife is 70. We have been at it since 2004 and sex is great!!
Good luck.
