worried man

I’m 43 and have been stressing over erectile issues this past year. I was worried that I had erectile dysfunction due to cardiovascular disease. My doctor in November assured me that my circulation is fine. I got my borderline-high blood pressure and cholesterol (201 now 130) back in normal ranges. I guess I have erectile dissatisfaction at this point. I haven’t been prescribed ED meds yet. Would taking supplements like L-Arginine or L-Citrulline help improve the blood flow down there?

Sure, you might try supplementing with L-arginine or L-citrulline, or with ginkgo, which improves blood flow around the body, including to the genitals. Why not? See if anything helps.

But please understand that stressing about your erections is not good for either your heart or your erections. In men with cardiovascular disease, severe stress increases risk of heart attack. Stress also triggers release of the stress hormone, cortisol, which constricts the arteries that carry blood to the penis. So the more you stress about your erections, the more likely you are to suffer erection impairment.

My suggestion: Incorporate a stress-management program into your life daily: meditation, yoga, tai chi, or any other moderate exercise. That should help keep your arteries open enough to raise firm erections.

P.S. If you take blood pressure medication, please understand that many blood pressure drugs contribute to erection problems. Ask your doctor and pharmacist about the sexual impact of all the medications you take, and if they harm erection, ask if you can switch to drugs that don’t have sexual side effects.
