man typing on laptop at office

I have not been sexually active for the past eight years, except a little masturbation now and then. I have great urges at times. Would masturbation be harmful to my BPH (Benign prostatic hyperplasia)?

  • Michael Castleman says:

No, masturbation does not aggravate BPH. As BPH develops, it presses on the urethra, resulting eventually in a weak urine stream. But men with BPH can still urinate, tho they may to consciously contract the muscles between their legs to squeeze all urine out. Orgasms solo or with a partner also squeeze the same muscles. But masturbation and orgasm have no impact on BPH. The two involve separate biological processes. So don’t worry about self-sexing. But if you find yourself getting up at night more than you’d like, or if your stream becomes very weak, see a urologist about getting your BPH treated.
