What is a healthy masturbation routine? I am addicted to excessive masturbation and I’m afraid it will effect my sex life as well as my family life

  • Michael Castleman says:

I’m inferring that you’re a man. Most men masturbate more than most women, and many men masturbate a great deal, daily or more often. I’ve never had a woman ask about excessive masturbation, only men, so I presume you’re a man.

I can’t define “excessive masturbation.” There’s no normal. Everyone is sexually unique, so it’s difficult to say what’s normal and what’s not. However, in my view, masturbation becomes a problem if it interferes with school, work, or sex in a relationship. If you’re okay with all of these, then masturbation isn’t harming you or your life. But if your masturbation interferes with school, work, or your sexual relationship, then you might consider sex therapy.

If you’re unfamiliar with sex therapy, the therapist does NOT have sex with you and does NOT watch you have sex. Sex therapy is a form of talk-based psychotherapy with “homework.” It usually takes four to six months of weekly one-hour sessions. It costs $150-200/hour, though many therapists discount fees for those who can’t afford standard rates. For more, read the chapter in my book my book Sizzling Sex for Life, and/or see the film, “Hope Springs” with Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones. To find a sex therapist near you, visit the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists, the Society for Sex Therapy and Research, or the American Board of Sexology.
