My doctor advised me that an injection of some kind of medical liquid into my penis to achieve erection. But I’m afraid that it will be very painful to prick myself by the needle, or that I can hurt myself.  I was also told that sometimes during the erection is very painful. What about to use Lidocaine spray for any  pain?

The liquid is the drug alprostadil (brand names: Caverject, Edex, Prostin). It produces erection in around 80% of users within about 20 minutes.

Most doctors suggest alprostadil only if oral erection medication (Viagra, Cialis, Levitra) has not provided sufficient benefit. Have you tried these drugs? If not, I suggest experimenting with them before trying alprostadil.

Many men can’t imagine sticking a syringe into the penis, and as a result, alprostadil is much less widely used than oral erection medication. If you can’t imagine injecting your penis, don’t use alprostadil. But men who have tried it tell me that the injection is not painful, that it feels like a pin prick, and that after some initial squeamishness, they adjust and have no difficulty with penile self-injection.

You can use a topical anesthetic like Lidocaine if you like, but the downside is numbing of the penis, which interferes with sexual responsiveness and pleasure.

One uncommon but possible alprostadil side effect is extended, painful erection (priapism). If this develops, go to an emergency room for treatment that deflates the erection and don’t use alprostadil again.

Mr. Castleman this is the first time i agree with you. I’ve tried all the pills and only the injections have worked. It was quite a task though. I went to tons of urologists and clinics even the one they advertise on the radio all the time and only one office was giving me some straightforward answers and respect! Too bad they only have one office so far in New York but I recommend anyone that has had their prostate removed or is diabetic like me needs to go there. And compared to everyone else they take insurance which changed everything for me. Take a look at their website you’re going to need them I guarantee it.

I had a similar problem, so I went to my urologist, and asked him about the whole erection-by-injection process. He offered me a liquid named in my country PAPAVERIN. First of all, ask your doctor to show you how to do it. It’s very simple, I’ve had no pain at all. 1. Examine a diagram of your penis, and you will see that there are two tubes in it. If these tubes fill with blood, you will have an erection. Over these tubes there are two lays of skin, the skin of your penis, and under the first, there is a layer of tissue that covers the tubes. “Under” the penis (dorsalis side) can be found the tube for urinating, but you won’t hurt it. You have to inject the liquid drug into the erection tube (one of them is enough). 2. Don’t accidentally inject into the veins of your penis. You can see them, because they are blue. 3. Choose the shortest and thinnest needle, and fill the injection tube with the liquid. You inject yourself at the “foot” of your penis (around 1,5 cm distance from your body) on the right or left side at “10,30 am” or “2,30 pm”. Be quick about it. The quicker you inject, the less pain there will be. The depth of the prick must be around 2 cm, or 1,5. You may easily check, because the length of the needle will not be more, than 2-2,5 cm. No pain, no blood, nothing. And if your girlfriend or spouse wants to, she can do it for you. If you are on the heavy side, it’s not as easy to find good injection sites because of your belly. Oh, by the way the needle must prick the penis as close to 90 degrees as possible, that is, perpendicular to the surface of the skin. Of course don’t forget to wash your penis with soap and water and alcohol before injecting yourself. As you have petting, you will have your erection. And another matter: start with a smaller dose of the liquid than the suggested amount, and note what happens (pain or no pain, erection or no). Finally your partner must know what’s going on because the needle might frighten her if you don’t explain. Sorry for my poor English, but I felt I had to communicate about an important matter like this one!

I had prostate cancer when I was 62 (2004) and had my prostate removed. Since I had 2 tumors directly beneath the erectal nerve bundles on each side of the prostate I could not have nerve-sparing procedure. I have been on injection therapy using tri-mix since that time. I use a diabetic ultra-thin 31 gauge needle 8 mm long. I usually inject twice a week or so. Usually I only feel pressure but now and then I feel a slight stick. I am fully erect in 10-15 minutes and stay that way for about 1 1/2 hours. For my wife and I the only differences between sex before cancer and after cancer is (1) waiting 10-15 minutes to get hard after I inject and (2) I don’t ejaculate sperm. I squirt drops of urine so I use a condom. This was a God-send to me and my wife since I can’t get normal erections. I was very nervous the first time but, thanks to the ultra-fine needle, it was OK. My urologist also gave me a sheet that showed how to give the injection which was really great since I had not ever given myself an injection.
I hope this is some help to you.
